Mary Travers, whose ringing, earnest vocals with the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary made songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” enduring anthems of the 1960s protest movement, died on Wednesday at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She was 72 and lived in Redding, Conn.

The cause was complications from chemotherapy associated with a bone-marrow transplant she had several years ago after developing leukemia, said Heather Lylis, a spokeswoman.

Ms. Travers brought a powerful voice and an unfeigned urgency to music that resonated with mainstream listeners. With her straight blond hair and willowy figure and two bearded guitar players by her side, she looked exactly like what she was, a Greenwich Villager directly from the clubs and the coffeehouses that nourished the folk-music revival.

Rashied Ali, born Robert Patterson in Philadelphia, became known for his innovations in free jazz drumming during the mid-60s, when he worked with John Coltrane. In 1967, Coltrane and Ali recorded the album Interstellar Space as a duo; it wasn't released until 1974, after Coltrane's death. Ali also played with such greats as Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders and Carlos Santana.

Ali ran the New York jazz club Ali's Alley from 1973 to 1979, and ran the record label Survival Records. Ali toured and recorded regularly with his group the Rashied Ali Quintet up until the very end.

SAO PAULO -- Former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, one of the most exciting fighters of his generation, was found dead in a hotel room in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas early Saturday.

Police investigator Edilson Alves told The Associated Press that the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered in his hotel room at the tourist resort, where Gatti had arrived on Friday with his Brazilian wife Amanda and 1-year-old son.

Alves said police were investigating and it was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died. Foul play is suspected in the death, the CBC reported.

Police said a pistol was discovered near the body of a woman also shot dead in a downtown condominium.
he McNair family released this statement through McNair's agent Bus Cook: "The families of Steve McNair in Mississippi and Tennessee appreciate the concern, thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of our loss of a husband, father and son. The family requests everyone would allow them time to mourn. The McNair Family appreciates and continues to request your prayers at this time."

Weekend Edition Sunday, May 3, 2009

Jack Kemp, the pro-quarterback turned Republican heavyweight, has died.

He first gained national attention in the early '60s, playing for the San Diego Chargers. But it was with the Buffalo Bills that he won two American Football Championships, in 1964 and 65.

His popularity on the football field helped catapult him into politics. Kemp won a Buffalo-area congressional seat in 1970.

He served in the House for nine terms, where he worked to cut federal taxes and to broaden the Republican Party. In 1988, Kemp ran for president.

He later dropped out of the race, but the man who was elected, George H.W. Bush, offered him a cabinet position as secretary of housing and urban development. There, he pushed for urban renewal and supported tenant ownership in public housing projects.

"I think it's immoral to preach democracy and capitalism in Eastern Europe and not allow it to work in East New York or East St. Louis or eastern L.A.," he said.

In 1996, Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole picked Kemp as his running mate — a choice celebrated by party conservatives.

They didn't win, but Kemp was a tireless campaigner throughout — often drawing on his football career when things seemed rough politically.

Kemp's office announced that he had cancer in January. He died Saturday night at his home in Bethesda, Maryland. He was 73.

Tell Me More, March 26, 2009 · Noted historian and pioneering Duke University Professor John Hope Franklin died yesterday at the age of 94. The legendary educator was widely respected for chronicling the African-American experience. The professor rose to become one of the most prominent and prolific scholars of his generation.

But Franklin not only chronicled the African American experience, he lived it. He was born in Oklahoma to a family who lost everything in the Tulsa race riots of 1921.

His seminal work, From Slavery to Freedom: A History of American Negroes, first published in 1947, placed the African-American experience squarely in the American narrative. During that same year Franklin began teaching at Howard University, where he worked on the Supreme Court case that outlawed public school segregation: Brown vs. Board of Education.

And in 1956, the teaching legend made history as the first African-American to chair the all-white history department at Brooklyn College.

Close friends and fellow scholars of Franklin — Duke University English Professor Karla Holloway, co-founder of the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies, and New York University professor and author David Levering Lewis — discuss why both the passion and the work of John Hope Franklin will live on

Morning Edition, March 2, 2009 · The man with one of America's most familiar radio voices has died. Paul Harvey had been heard on national radio since 1951 and was known for his trademark delivery of "The Rest of the Story." He died Saturday at the age of 90.

Weekend Edition Sunday, March 1, 2009 · Radio newscaster Paul Harvey, one of America's most familiar voices, has died. The AM legend was 90 years old, and up until recently was still heard by millions of listeners on his ABC radio broadcasts.

His trademark greeting, "Stand by for news," was instantly recognizable. At the height of his fame, more than 22 million people would stand by, waiting for his mix of the serious and absurd.

Delivered in his unique Midwestern staccato, he was famous for the anecdotes he'd tell about the lives of famous people. "And now," he would announce, "the rest of the story." The gimmick was that he wouldn't reveal the person's name until the final words of the broadcast.

He would have loved telling this epic story — about a radio pioneer born and raised in the South.

"My father was a lawman in the early dirt-street days of Tulsa, Oklahoma," Harvey once recalled. "He was shot to death when I was 3. So, surely, at least some of my stubborn reverence for a policeman's uniform dates back to that night before Christmas many lonely years ago."

Perhaps it was the loneliness that made this young man fall in love with words and run off to join the radio. At 14, he began his career by sweeping the floors of an AM station in Tulsa.

Soon he was sweeping the streets for news. Reporting and announcing in Kansas, then St. Louis, and finally arriving in the city he would call home for the rest of his life — Chicago.

There he became more storyteller than newscaster.

As the radioman would later recall, he was living the glamorous life of an ABC anchor: getting up at 3:30 in the morning, eating a bowl of oatmeal and poring over news clippings.

"I try to select from tens of thousands of possibilities," he said. "Those stories that I think you need to know, and those stories that I think you want to know."

And he'd toss in few stories to reflect his belief in God and country.

He was a supporter of Sen. Joseph McCarthy and an early backer of the Vietnam War. His most famous broadcast may have been in 1970 when he announced his opposition to Nixon's expansion of the war. "Mr. President, I love you," Harvey said, "but you're wrong."

By the time the anchor was in his 80s, his voice started to betray him. In 2001, throat problems took him off the air temporarily, and his son started to fill in regularly for him.

Last year, his wife and longtime producer, Lynne, died. When the radioman returned to the air months afterward, he wasn't the same.

"The loneliest days of my loneliest winter are still very much with me," he said. "The years don't always add wisdom, but they add perspective."

His famous anecdotes always had a twist at the end, but this one finishes just as it began — with a man who loved words and knew how to deliver them.

If you've ever listened to AM radio, you already know the rest of the story, and you know his name.

Blossom Dearie, the jazz pixie with a little-girl voice and pageboy haircut who was a fixture in New York and London nightclubs for decades, died on Saturday at her apartment in Greenwich Village. She was 84.

She died in her sleep of natural causes, said her manager and representative, Donald Schaffer. Her last public appearances, in 2006, were at her regular Midtown Manhattan stomping ground, the now defunct Danny’s Skylight Room.

A singer, pianist and songwriter with an independent spirit who zealously guarded her privacy, Ms. Dearie pursued a singular career that blurred the line between jazz and cabaret. An interpretive minimalist with caviar taste in songs and musicians, she was a genre unto herself. Rarely raising her sly, kittenish voice, Ms. Dearie confided song lyrics in a playful style below whose surface layers of insinuation lurked. Her cheery style influenced many younger jazz and cabaret singers, most notably Stacey Kent and the singer and pianist Daryl Sherman.
Millard Fuller, who founded the U.S. charity Habitat for Humanity, a pioneering organization that builds houses for low-income families around the world, died on Tuesday at age 74, his organization said.

Fuller set up Habitat in 1976 to help people too poor to qualify for conventional mortgages own their own homes. The charity relied on volunteers and donations to build simple but decent houses for people and only charged at cost.

Families living in Habitat homes did not pay interest on their mortgages and, partly as a result, Fuller is credited as a global leader of the affordable housing movement.

Habitat says it has housed 1.5 million people in 3,000 communities around the world. Fuller was fired by the organization in 2005, in part because of allegations of sexual misconduct toward a female employee.

He later founded the Fuller Center for Housing.

A Christian, Fuller developed the idea behind Habitat first in the U.S. state of Georgia, then while working as a missionary in Mbandaka, a city in western Congo.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter donated money and time to Habitat, organizing high-profile annual week-long projects to build homes for the organization around the world.

President Bill Clinton awarded Fuller the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996, the highest civilian award in the United States.

He was "one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known," Carter said in a statement. Fuller died after a short illness, the Fuller Center said on its Web site.

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist and flutist David "Fathead" Newman has died in upstate New York.

His manager says Newman died Tuesday night of pancreatic cancer at a hospital in Kingston. He was 75.

Newman began his career while still in college touring with Charlie Parker mentor Henry "Buster" Smith. In 1954, he joined the Ray Charles Band as tenor soloist. He spent 12 years with the group.

Newman later played and recorded with a wide range of jazz and soul luminaries, such as Herbie Mann, Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville. He also led a successful solo career.

The news came as a surprise to many jazz fans, as Newman had been highly productive in recent years, releasing a CD a year on the HighNote label, and there had been little publicity about his illness.
John Travolta’s Son, Jett, Dead At 16
Published by Josh Horowitz on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 10:14 pm.

Tragedy struck the Travolta family this holiday weekend when Jett Travolta, just 16 years old, was found unconscious in the family’s vacation home in the Bahamas, later to be pronounced dead. According to a report by the Associated Press the son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston suffered a seizure and hit his head rendering him unconscious in a bathroom at the home. A caretaker at the house found the teenager on Friday morning. After being taken to a local hospital he was pronounced dead.

Reportedly Jett Travolta had a developmental disability that his parents linked to Kawasaki disease, an inflammatory disorder of the artery walls that most commonly occurs in young children and can lead to heart disease.

According to People magazine Preston said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with the disease. She blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health.

Recalling when his son was diagnosed, John Travolta told Larry King in 2001, “I was obsessive about cleaning — his space being clean, so we constantly had the carpets cleaned. And I think, between him, the fumes and walking around, maybe picking up pieces or something, he got what is rarely a thing to deal with, but it’s Kawasaki syndrome.”

Jett was the older of two children of John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Their daughter, Ella Bleu, is eight years old.

In a more enlightened age, Majel Barrett Roddenberry might have rated a Federation command. As it was, she helped rule the Star Trek universe.

Roddenberry, the widow of Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, died today at her Bel-Air, Calif., home, Roddenberry.com said. The reported cause of death was leukemia.

Billed through much of her acting career as Majel Barrett, Roddenberry played Dr. McCoy's loyal, Spock-admiring assistant, Nurse Chapel, on the original 1966-69 Trek series. She also provided the voice of the USS Enterprise's computer—a role she continued with through the franchise's various offshoots, including J.J. Abrams' upcoming big-screen reboot, Star Trek.

Her musical repertoire consists largely of American folk music, blues, jazz, and spirituals. An important figure in the American folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, she was influential musically and ideologically to many of the key figures of the folk-revival of that time, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Janis Joplin.
Peter Camejo, Green Party Figure, Is Dead at 68

Published: September 14, 2008

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Peter M. Camejo, a Green Party leader who ran three times for governor of California and was Ralph Nader’s running mate in the 2004 presidential race, died Saturday. He was 68.

Mr. Camejo, who had lymphoma, died at his home in Folsom, a suburb east of Sacramento.

“Peter was a friend, colleague and politically courageous champion of the downtrodden and mistreated of the entire Western Hemisphere,” Mr. Nader said in a written statement.

Mr. Camejo ran for governor in 2002, 2003 and 2006, supporting abortion rights, the legalization of marijuana, universal health care and a moratorium on the death penalty. Before joining the Green Party, he was the Socialist Workers Party nominee for president in 1976.

A first-generation Venezuelan-American born in New York City, Mr. Camejo became an activist at an early age, speaking out against the Vietnam War and for the rights of migrant workers. He marched in Selma, Ala., with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mr. Camejo is survived by his wife, Morella; a daughter, Alexandra; a son, Victor; three brothers; and three grandchildren.

Though the cause of death has not been confirmed, Mac had been hospitalized recently for pneumonia. Foster said that she received calls early Saturday morning from a close friend of the Mac family, confirming the reports of Mac's death.

On Friday, a spokeswoman for the actor, whose real name is, Bernard McCullough, said that he had been responding well to treatment for the illness.

Publicist Danica Smith said Thursday in a statement that Mac's condition is ''stable.'' Smith first announced on August 1st that Mac was hospitalized in Chicago.

Smith has said the pneumonia isn't related to an inflammatory lung disease Mac also has. That condition has been in remission since 2005.

Foster noted that last weekend, several web sites reported wrongly that the comedian died.

Mac made waves last month with off-color jokes during a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The comedian starred in the critically acclaimed Fox television series ''The Bernie Mac Show.'' His film credits include roles in the ''Ocean's Eleven'' franchise.

"Estelle Getty of 'Golden Girls' dies at 84
By BOB THOMAS – 20 hours ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.

Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.

"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."

"The Golden Girls," featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff's belief that television was ignoring its older viewers.

Three of its stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in "Maude," Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Rue McClanahan in "Mama's Family." The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character.

"Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her," Arthur said in a statement. ... "
It's a shame she didn't get a lot more work than she did. She was great fun to watch.

George Carlin, irreverent comedian, dies at 71
By Mel Watkins Published: June 23, 2008

George Carlin, the Grammy-Award winning standup comedian and actor who was hailed for his irreverent social commentary, poignant observations of the absurdities of everyday life and language, and groundbreaking routines like "Seven Words You Can Never Use on Television," died in Los Angeles on Sunday, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He was 71.

The cause of death was heart failure, according to Abraham.

Carlin began his standup comedy act in the late 1950s and made his first television solo guest appearance on "The Merv Griffin Show" in 1965. At that time, he was primarily known for his clever wordplay and reminiscences of his Irish working-class upbringing in New York.

But from the outset their were indications of an anti-establishment edge to his comedy. Initially, it surfaced in the witty patter of a host of offbeat characters like the wacky sportscaster Biff Barf and the hippy-dippy weatherman Al Sleet. "The weather was dominated by a large Canadian low, which is not to be confused with a Mexican high. Tonight's forecast . . . dark, continued mostly dark tonight turning to widely scattered light in the morning."

Carlin released his first comedy album, "Take-Offs and Put-Ons," to rave reviews in 1967. He also dabbled in acting, winning a recurring part as Marlo Thomas' theatrical agent in the sitcom "That Girl" (1966-67) and a supporting role in the movie "With Six You Get Egg-Roll," released in 1968.

By the end of the decade, he was one of America's best known comedians. He made more than 80 major TV appearances during that time, including the Ed Sullivan Show and Johnny Carson's Tonight Show; he was also regularly featured at major nightclubs in New York and Las Vegas.
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
(06-18) 04:00 PDT Los Angeles - --

Cyd Charisse, who brought sizzle and sophistication to dance in classic movie musicals such as "Singin' in the Rain" and "Silk Stockings," died Tuesday. She was 86.

Ms. Charisse died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering an apparent heart attack Monday, publicist Gene Schwam said.

Ms. Charisse captured moviegoers' attention in a quick succession of films, starting with "Singin' in the Rain" in 1952, in which she partnered with dancer and actor Gene Kelly in a steamy ballet.

She was strong, lithe and "drop-dead gorgeous to look at," said Larry Billman, a dance/film historian and author of her breakthrough performance. She teamed with Kelly again in "Brigadoon" in 1954 and "It's Always Fair Weather" the next year.

Ms. Charisse also danced with Fred Astaire, the premier dancer of his age, in major production numbers in the '50s. In "The Band Wagon" (1953), they danced to the music of "Dancing in the Dark" on a set that looked like New York City's Central Park. Four years later, Ms. Charisse and Astaire were partners in "Silk Stockings." Astaire said that Ms. Charisse was "beautiful dynamite" on screen. Ms. Charisse's other starmaker roles of the 1950s included "Deep in My Heart" (1954), in which she danced a sexy duet with James Mitchell.

Unlike many top female dancers in the era of movie musicals, Ms. Charisse was trained as a ballerina in the Russian tradition.

Italian director Dino Risi, who was nominated for two Oscars for the 1974 film Profumo di Donna (Scent of a Woman), has died in Rome aged 91.

Mr Risi, who was known as one of the masters of Italian comedy, had been suffering ill-health for some time.

He made more than 50 productions, many focusing on his country's society in the boom years after World War II.

Italy had lost "a noble and vital father of its cinema and its culture", said Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno.

"His legacy is pages of minute work by someone who loved the world and his country," he added.

"We have lost one of the masters of the most beautiful and intense seasons of the Italian comedy, which gave the world so much."

Medical background

Born in Milan in 1916, Mr Risi became an orphan at the age of 12 and was looked after by relatives and friends of his family.

He studied medicine - his father had been the doctor at La Scala opera house in the Italian city - before working as an assistant director to cinema figures such as Mario Soldati and Alberto Lattuada.

Among Mr Risi's most famous works were Il Sorpasso (The Easy Life) and Poveri ma Belli (Poor Girl, Pretty Girl).

Profumo di Donna (Scent of a Woman) told of an army captain blinded during the war who used his sense of smell to identify types of women.

The original film was shortlisted for the Oscars for best foreign-language movie and best adapted screenplay, while a remake earned Al Pacino an Academy Award for acting in 1993.

Mr Risi received a Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival six years ago and continued working into his eighties.

However he once described his sadness that many of his friends and colleagues in the industry had passed away.

"There should be a law that everyone dies at 80," he said.

He told an interviewer several years ago that he was "curious about death".

"I expect some surprises. Life, after all, is not all it's made out to be," Mr Risi said.

Audrey Hepburn's ex, director Mel Ferrer, dies
By BOB THOMAS – 6 hours ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mel Ferrer, the tall, darkly handsome star of such classic films as "Lili," "War and Peace" and "The Sun Also Rises," as well as producer and director of movies starring his then-wife, Audrey Hepburn, has died at age 90.

Ferrer died Monday at a Santa Barbara convalescent home, his son Mark Ferrer told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He had been in failing health for the past six months and had recently moved to the home from his nearby ranch in Carpinteria, his son said.

Ferrer's most impressive film role came in 1953 in "Lili." He played a crippled carnival puppeteer with whom a French orphan (played by Leslie Caron) falls in love.

He also won critical acclaim as Luis Bello in Robert Rossen's 1951 depiction of the public and private life of a bullfighter in "The Brave Bulls," based on a Tom Lea book, and starred opposite Hepburn in 1956's "War and Peace." ...
Yves Saint Laurent, considered by many as the greatest fashion designer of the 20th Century, has died in Paris at the age of 71.

Saint Laurent changed the face of the fashion industry when he became chief designer of the House of Dior at 21. He designed clothes that reflected women's changing role in society: more confident personally, sexually and in the work-place. He retired from haute couture in 2002 and had been ill for some time.

Saint Laurent died on Sunday evening in the French capital, the Pierre-Berge-Saint Laurent Foundation announced.

Pierre Berge, the designer's former business and personal partner, said he had died at his home after a long illness. He did not give details.
